How to Avoid Mosquito Bites
Nobody cares for mosquitoes, perhaps because they serve no useful function. A mosquito draws food by inserting a proboscis into the flesh of a mammal and drawing blood. Unfortunately the mosquito's bite also brings along discomfort, pain, disease and even an allergic reaction in a growing number of cases. Diseases spread by the mosquito are numerous and include millions of deaths by maleria each year to recent outbreaks of the West Nile Virus. Prevention is the best cure, in other words deter the mosquito before it bites you.
To Prevent Individual Mosquito Bites
- Kill the mosquito by grabbing it out of the air. Unless you practice this a great deal, you will find it hard to accomplish and the air of your moving hand gives the mosquito plenty of warning, and can even blow it out of your grasp. If you really want a challenge with this technique, try grabbing the mosquito with chopsticks.
- Kill the mosquito with a mosquito squatter. The squatter, usually made of a thicker metal or plastic, is mounted on the end of a springy wire, dramatically increasing your chances of hitting a stationary mosquito by increasing the momentum in your whap. You can also use your hand in a similar flipping motion.
- Kill the flying mosquito with a Double-handed clap. Using two hands is more effective than one, as the air coming from each hand will blow the mosquito into the opposing palm.

To Prevent Many Mosquito Bites
- There are many non-prescription creams, sprays and other
chemical based products you can use on your own skin, or around your
camp or garden, to avoid mosquito bites. Two such products are
Citronella or Deet. As with any product, their effectiveness depends on
the situation, your own skin chemistry, and the exact type of mosquito
you are dealing with.
Deet
- Avoid areas prone to mosquito infestations. Mosquito's are often attracted to water, especially standing water.
- Invest in an electric hanging mosquito "zapper". Many varieties are available in your local well stocked hardware store (WSHS), or look on line. They may even have a USB one by now.
- Some people claim that orange peel will drive mosquitoes away. It works for cats, so it may be worth a try if you have no other solution.
- Sleep with a mosquito net over your bed, but check for holes regularly.
Tips
- Mosquito squatters can come in many shapes and sizes. Any item that will make your arm longer, and therefore your swing faster, will suffice including rolled up magazines.
- Sleep with someone the mosquitoes like more than you, not very nice for your partner but you should be OK!
- If your preferred tool of choice is the mosquito squatter.
consider purchasing a more powerful version. The Electric zapper is
shaped like a tennis racket with an electric current, passing through
the head portion. This will help to make sure your target mosquito is
dead, even if you don't quite hit it. Get a rechargeable one if you
plan to use it a great deal.
Electric Mosquito racket - In Thailand look for a citronella plant and break one off a twig. The smell may discourage them.
Warnings
- Mosquitoes do not have EARS noise emitting devices no not work! I learnt this the hard way from a trip to the tropical disease centre in London (they have 100's of different mosquitoes there to study), after a very humiliating trial (with a high-pitch noise emitter and 20 huge African mosquitoes) the professor explained that they cannot hear! Rather mosquitoes are attracted to light and heat and probably to certain chemicals called pheromones given off by humans and many other mammals.
- Mosquitoes tend to bite a dawn and dusk - take extra care
- If you are going to Jungle areas take some Malaria prevention

- Check for the Adam’s apple (although these are now being removed)
- Height; (anything above 5.8 is a little suspicious)
- Modified facial features.
- The only sure way to tell is to check for the prostate gland, but once you get that far…
- Listen to the voice.
- Look at the way she/he walks.

How to Avoid Mosquitoes Bites in Thailand or Anywhere else for That Matter!
Prevention
is always better than cure, the one thing that is sure to annoy most
people on holiday is the tiny whirring of a mosquito or 2 in your ear
while you are trying to sleep. What can you do?
Also spreaders of disease and can be very painful.
Steps
- 1 hand snatch - not very effective as the air from your hand pushes the mossy away.
- 1 hand slap against the wall - very effective as long as you have some tissue to wipe it off, is that all your blood?
- Double handed clap - more effective that the single snatch
and flicking it onto the floor to join its colleagues can be
satisfying. - Mosquito nets - great as long as you check for holes every night, 1 hole lots of mosquitoes.
- Electric zapper - shaped like a tennis racket with an
electric current, great as long as the batteries last, get a
rechargeable one. Good satisfaction as well. Electric Mosquito racket - Spray - Citronella or Deet last for about 8 hours but some brands smell rather noxious. Deet
